Test selection guide

Which test for which purpose?

The right instrument depends on the decision you’re making. Some tests are built for selection; others are designed only for development, and using them to hire is against their publishers’ guidelines.

Who it's for: HR managers, L&D leads and leaders choosing an assessment.
How it works

The quick guide

Recruitment & selection: 15FQ+ for personality, plus ability tests (abstract, critical, general or graduate reasoning) and role-specific batteries. Values and work-attitude inventories can add further insight.

Leadership development & coaching: 15FQ+ for depth, EQ-i 2.0® (or EQ 360®) for emotional intelligence, MSCEIT for an ability-based EI measure.

Team communication & conflict: DiSC® or MBTI® — both give teams a shared language. Neither should be used for hiring.

Career guidance: MBTI®, Strengths Profile and the Values and Motives Inventory.

The Impact

Three rules we follow

Fit for purpose
  • Match the instrument to the decision
  • Development tools stay out of hiring
Qualified use
  • Administered and interpreted by trained practitioners
  • Tests never used as the only decision factor
Fair to people
  • Every test-taker gets a debrief
  • Results confidential unless agreed
